Our vineyard is also the home of the Goldwater Wine Science Centre. Together with the University of Auckland, Goldie Estate intend to continue the innovative spirit of the Goldwater family with the establishment of a premium wine education facility where students are hardwired to the needs of the wine industry. The immersion of students in an operating winery setting also means the winery benefits through access to leading academic developments.
ABOUT THE PROGRAMME
In the last twenty years, the global wine industry has become increasingly internationalised and sophisticated. Along with other new-world producers, the New Zealand wine industry has grown rapidly. This success has created demands for highly trained and skilled participants and for locally focused scientific research of the highest standards.
The Wine Science Postgraduate Programme at The University of Auckland caters for these demands. The programme uses the experiences of winemaking in New Zealand to highlight the multiple dimensions and applications of wine science. A central theme is that wine science is more than simply winemaking. The programme is organised around the understanding of wine production as a process that runs from the vine to the mouth. Courses examine the science of grape production and winemaking, and analytical techniques in winemaking. Students also have the opportunity to learn about the organisation and operation of wine businesses and the industry as a whole. They are encouraged to pursue particular fields of interest by completing a research project in wine science and by enrolling in relevant specialised papers in associated departments. Lecturers and researchers already working in wine-related fields in chemistry, biological sciences, geography and international business are involved in teaching courses alongside Wine Science staff and leading New Zealand winemakers. The teaching programme has close associations with the newly established Wine Industry Research Institute of New Zealand. Located at The University of Auckland, the institute conducts research on trade, markets, industry development and biophysical production environments. The programme also has strong links with leading international programmes of wine science research and aims to foster international scientific exchange and to offer opportunities for student exchanges.
